Selfies

Gera 23.01.2018

The thing is that I have never felt, or considered myself physically attractive, The only thing I can see infront of the mirror is my bald head, droopy eyes, my dopple chin bidding behind my patchy beard, and an endless fight against the scale. There are people who are good looking and photogenic, for those the nerd ones have invented "selfies".

There is the misconception that selfies are a thing of modern life, going back to history, we see that self portraits are as old as human kind. Take a look at all the great painters, at one time of their lives they all did a selfie. Look at Vivian Maier, how many self portraits she took at windows and around downtown? The thing that is terribly modern is the cult that has been built around "beautiful people".

Today you do not need to have any special talent or discipline to have a succesful feed on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr... or whatever that is popular these days, the only thing you need to have is: the looks, and a mobile, having full cleavage is an advantage. The "duck face" the "dog face" and the "cat face" (if there is such thing) are the most degrading acts a person could do in order to get the attention of people you will never get to know.

When did we lose the way? how come we started with those great selfies from Rembrandt, and we landed with the "duck face"? is social media going to be the end of civilization as we may think we know it? and what it is with the unbalaced nature of selfies now a days where mostly women get to be popular and followed.

There was a time when real artists used to walk on the earth, when they work was discussed at dinner tables, today young people feel they have done enough by "linking" a selfie on their favorite social media plataform.

Really people? really?
